February 2007
In gratitude for the generosity of all who together contributed over £1000 for each of the past two years, we have received the following message from Bishop Matthias Medadues-Badouhu, Bishop of Ho:
"Hohoe, St Luke's is the Parish I want to suggest to our good friends of Stokesley Parish. Fr Redeemer Semevor is the Care-Taker Priest within the Worawora Deanery and Parish. At the next Diocesan Standing Committee meeting, I hope to recommend its elevation to a full parochial status with St Paul's, Jasikan as its outstation. Do convey this message to my dear people of Stokesley. I hope to get their accurate history and forward to you later."
Fr Redeemer Semevor was ordained as deacon in 2003, initially to serve St Patrick's, Kpando, the third town in the region.
His new parish at Hohoe, second town of the Volta region, is some 50 miles due north of Ho; Jakisan is 20 miles north of Hohoe (road distances are greater).
The Diocese of Ho, newly formed in 2003 in the poorest area of the country, is very large and includes parts of the neighbouring country of Togo (Ho was formerly the administrative capital of German Togoland).
Apart from Ho, the main town where the Cathedral is, Hohoe and Kpando, the area is largely rural with small towns and villages.
While our commitment is to provide a stipend for Fr Redeemer (£50 a month, through an envelope scheme - £1 a month from at least 50 people), he is likely to have the assistance of one or more catechists, each paid a monthly allowance of £15. So any additional funds we are able to provide will help with these and other expenses in a large parish, not least for travelling. If you would like to help Fr Redeemer in his work:
please contact Noël Harker at Stokesley Parish Church, by telephone: 710771, or e-mail nemh @ globalnet.co.uk (to avoid spam, spaces have been added either side of @ and should be deleted to send an e-mail)
